The Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development’s 10th annual Senior Executive R&D Roundtable was held November 2006 in Boston. Detailed highlights of the 2006 event have been published as part of our Tufts CSDD R&D Management Report series.
The 2007 R&D Management Report, entitled“Structuring Clinical Organization to Improve R&D Productivity,” provides a summary of the 2006 meeting. The report highlights the guest speakers’ presentations, a panel session, and ensuing discussions on a broad range of topics that dealt with how to cope with the challenges and pitfalls of creating clinical capabilities and becoming a clinical organization. Strategic and operational topics were discussed, which included:
- How to balance value creation, risk, and burn in a clinical stage company
- Utilizing metrics to drive performance
- Economic modeling
- Setting up a project plan
- The economics of outsourcing
- What can go wrong with a suboptimal study design and poor data

The 2006 R&D Management Report, entitled “Transformational Change in Clinical Development” summarizes the speakers” presentations and ensuing discussions which covered a broad range of topics focused on improving clinical trial efficiency and boosting R&D performance. Topics from the 2005 meeting include the:
- Use of flexible approaches to clinical trials
- Utilization of real-time data collection and analysis
- Integration of drug safety evaluation seamlessly across all phases of drug development and commercialization
- Use of adaptive clinical trials for optimizing drug development
