Tufts CSDD is an independent, academic, nonprofit research center within the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. We are a multidisciplinary, globally-focused team dedicated to optimizing drug development performance and efficiency through robust, data-driven assessments, analysis and insight.

The Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development (Tufts CSDD) operates within Tufts University, a 501(c)(3) non-profit academic institution.

Our mission is to objectively inform stakeholder understanding of the evolving global drug development enterprise and to optimize drug development performance, efficiency and economics through robustly gathered, data-driven assessment and analysis.

We have thirteen full-time employees, including four faculty members (including our Executive Director), a six-person research team, and three administrators. We also have numerous fellows, consultants, affiliate faculty, speakers, and often collaborate with other organizations that are active in the global drug development landscape.

Our physical address is located at 145 Harrison Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts 021111, in the Medical Education Building on the Tufts University Boston Campus. Since the pandemic, our Center has operated primarily remotely with periodic staff gatherings at our Boston office.

Research grant funding and sponsorship support comes from a variety of sources including government agencies, foundations, disease advocacy groups, universities, pharmaceutical companies, research services providers, and trade associations. Although organizations providing grant funding and sponsorship may suggest topics for investigation, the Tufts CSDD research agenda is set independently by the center director and the faculty. The results of all research conducted by Tufts CSDD must be published in peer-reviewed and
trade journals.

In any given year, approximately 55% of Tufts CSDD’s operating expenses are supported by grants from the private sector and 45% from the public sector.
